How Harbour Arch will benefit Cape Town
Harbour Arch, the development set to become the largest mixed-use precinct in Cape Town, is back on track after the Covid-19 lockdown temporarily halted construction. Here’s why this 5.8 hectare development, featuring six tower blocks and 200 000m² of usable space, is such good news for the Mother City.
Job creation
The construction phase of Harbour Arch will create 18 000 jobs in the city and generate a significant R2,3 billion towards household incomes. This comes at a time when South Africa’s unemployment rate has reached 30% and is set to worsen due to the Covid-19 crisis. In addition, at least 5000 long-term positions will be created by large tenants within the precinct like Marriott Hotels as well as retailers and restauranteurs.
Inner city investment
The development of Harbour Arch will see Amdec investing R14 billion into the Cape Town CBD, with R100 million of the total investment bill being allocated to upgrading the city’s roads, drainage systems and other key infrastructure – a move that will benefit not only the residents and tenants of the Harbour Arch precinct, but the wider city too.
Confidence boost
With the construction industry taking a serious knock in the past few months, the recommencement of Harbour Arch promises to give the local industry a significant boost and is a powerful vote of confidence in Cape Town’s future, which will hopefully ignite further investment in the city going forward.
Urban design
Harbour Arch is not simply another apartment building or office complex. Instead, it is a carefully considered precinct intended to uplift the East City; a destination with inspired architectural design and beautiful recreational spaces, where locals and visitors to the city can work, live and play.
